Nurture your mind with great thoughts, for you will never go any higher than you think.
– Benjamin Disraeli

What is positive thinking?

Positive thinking is the idea that you can change your life by thinking about things positively.

The idea may seem immature to many.

However, research shows that positive thinking has a scientific basis. One may not be able to change the world, but one can definitely change the way one perceives it and reacts to it.

Doing so will reflect on how you feel about yourself and others, which will ultimately have a huge impact on your learning.

Positive Psychology: Practicing the power of thinking positive

The positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible.
– Winston Churchill

Experts continue to find evidence that our thoughts – negative or positive – have psychological effects as well as physiological effects on our body.

Advantages of positive thinking include a reduction in stress, better overall physical and emotional health, an extended lifespan and better-coping skills.

A positive self-image is the key to living a healthy and happy life.

Research shows that people who feel confident about themselves are better at

  • Solving problems
  • Making decisions
  • Taking more risks
  • Asserting themselves
  • Striving to meet their personal goals

Here are some tips from the field of positive psychology that will help you be more positive and feel better.

1. Pay attention to your thoughts

Gaining awareness of your negative self-talk and replacing your negative thoughts with positive ones is a technique that will help you think more positively.

Develop positive statements to replace negative by using words such as happy, peaceful, loving, enthusiastic etc.

2. Nourish your body and mind

To feel loved is a basic human desire. Sometimes it comes from within. To love ourselves fully, we must incorporate healthy habits into our lives for a nourished body, mind and soul.

A few ways to nourish your body are:

  • Excercising
  • Eating healthy foods
  • Streaching
  • Connecting with others

A few ways to nourish your mind are to:

  • Do a puzzle
  • Meditate
  • Breathing deeply
  • Laughing

These activities in conjunction nourish the mind and the body while simultaneously improving positive thinking and having a positive outlook.

3. Give back and help others

Giving back has a positive effect on your body not to mention that you feel great after doing so. Studies show that when people donated to charity, the portion of the brain responsible for feeling sensations of reward was triggered.

The brain also released feel-good chemicals which spurs you to perform more kind acts. Giving back can also improve your self-esteem, sense of belonging and make you feel more appreciative and thankful for what you have.

4. Create affirming lists

Make lists and read them often. This will help you feel more positive about yourself. Write affirming lists on a piece of paper or into your journal.

For example, you could write:

  • 5 of your strengths
  • 5 things you admire about yourself
  • 5 of your greatest achievements in life
  • 10 things you can do to make yourself laugh
  • 10 things you can do to help someone else

The placebo effect

High-end trials for new medicines and therapies compare a treatment group which receives the new treatment with a control group that does not.

Bus as a general rule these control groups do not just have no treatment, instead, they receive a placebo.

A placebo is a treatment substitute which looks like real medicine but has no physical effect.

Some examples of placebos include sugar pills or flavoured water instead of genuine tablets or medicines.

These experiments are conducted to see whether the body can heal itself if the mind believes that it’s treating the body.

The placebo effect is a well-documented phenomenon in medicine, in which those who think that they are being given a new and effective treatment are more likely to recover than those who know that their treatment includes nothing new.

A positive attitude will probably not cure cancer in itself, but positive thinking will make it better easier to manage your life, reduce stress, and also help up to take care of yourself better. These things are important to help you recover from serious diseases.
