In the numerous workshops that I conduct, I meet a lot of people.

Most people who are unhappy with their lives almost always start talking about their problems by saying: This isn’t the life I dreamt of. I thought things would be a lot different.

My obvious next question is: So, what did you think your dream life would be like?

Is everyone able to answer this question? Mostly everyone do say that they thought they’d be happier than they are right now.

My advice to them is – Happiness is a goal. The fact that you wish to achieve it is great. The road to get there is different for everyone. What makes me happy would differ from what makes you happy.

And the tricky part here is, no one can tell you the secret to happiness. You have to figure it out on your own. All I can do is guide you towards it.

Have you been struggling to achieve your dreams, too? Are you in search of happiness and confused where to find it?

While there’s no one-size-fits-all, let me share with you 7 very basic things you must do.

1. Figure out what you want

It may seem like the most obvious thing, but you’d be surprised at how many people are yet to figure it out.

Wanting to achieve your dreams, or being happy, is one part of the story. The more important part is figuring out what will make you happy.

  1. Do you want to perform better at your job?
  2. Do you wish to be your own boss?
  3. Do you wish to spend less time at work and more time with your family?

Figuring out what you want is half the battle won. Because unless you know what you wish to achieve, how will you even start working towards it?

2. Access your abilities

When it comes to dreaming or believing in your dreams, people may tell you where to stop. How does that matter? Important here is self-analysis.

Dreaming about achieving something which is beyond your skill, or being lazy, is like setting yourself up for disappointment.

I had a client whose ultimate aim was to lose weight and start eating healthy. Seems like a very simple and achievable dream, right?

But dreaming about losing weight was all he did. Most of it while munching on a bag of chips!

He refused to put in any effort. Or make any lifestyle changes to actually achieve his goals. Quite obviously, he failed at it.

So, before you even decide what your dreams are and start imagining what life would be like after the dream has come true, be willing to work towards it.

Access your abilities if you’re skilled enough, or willing to work hard enough to acquire the skills needed to make it come true.

3. Face your fears

I had another client whose dream was to become a professional pilot.

And during her training, she was involved in an accident which left a deep impact on her mind. Every time she’d think about flying, she would get scared and fail.

With her will power in utilizing our techniques, she was easily able to fight her fears.

Your fears are the biggest obstacles in your way to success. If you can accept and fight your fears, you can do anything you want.

4. Take risks

They say – nothing worth having comes easy.

Think about it. Would you value and enjoy having the things you dream of, if it all came to you easily?

Probably not.

Making you work hard for your dreams is life’s way of showing you how lucky you are to have achieved your dreams.

Which is why, in order to achieve your dreams, it’s very important to take risks. Step out of your comfort zone. And push yourself to become a better version of yourself.

5. Have a plan and stick to it

How will you ever achieve your dreams if your plan is missing?

When you’re working towards a dream, it’s natural to be excited and overwhelmed by the possibility of it coming true. And many times, it prevents people from actually working towards it.

To ensure you can avoid this trap, make a plan.

And stick to it. If you are confused if you can do it alone, ask someone to help you.

Someone who can keep a track of your progress, motivate and guide you when needed.

6. Set a deadline

This is the most important rule. And often the most overlooked.

You are very likely to get lazy when your deadline is ambiguous.

Take my friend who was unable to lose weight, for example. He was lazy to set a deadline for himself.

Had he set one, he would’ve felt some urgency when the deadline was nearing and would’ve done something about it.

And because he had yet to decide how much weight he wanted to lose and by when, he kept thinking he had time and would do it one day.

Setting a deadline is actually one of the best ways to ensure you keep working towards your dreams.

7. Work hard

Do I need to tell you this?

We all know how important it is to work hard towards your goals. Whether you are striving for success in personal life or professional life, hard work is inevitable.

Once you’ve set your eyes on your goals, smart and hard work is the only way to make your dreams come true.

8. Bonus Tip: Know when to give up

This is a tip most people avoid listening to. Rather, this is an important tip.

It’s true that hard work and determination can help you achieve most of your dreams. Its important to remember that some things are out of your reach. And knowing when to stop chasing something is just as important.

These are some of the most basic tips you can use to move a step closer towards your dreams.
